Meet the folks behind The Fox and the Farmhouse
Dan and Darlene

Dan and Darlene owners

Over the years, we've had the opportunity to travel to many places, including several continents through construction and medical mission work. Those experiences taught us that no matter where you are in the world, true hospitality always begins with a warm welcome and a genuine smile.

Today, we call Winder, Georgia home, where we live in a charming circa 1906 farmhouse surrounded by beautiful walnut and pecan trees. It’s a place rich with character, history, and the kind of peaceful charm we’re excited to share with others.

Together, we’ve poured those experiences into creating a place where guests can relax, feel cared for, and enjoy the charm of this lovely town. We hope your time here feels comfortable, memorable, and filled with the same warmth that inspired us to open our doors.

Dan has spent more than 30 years as a commercial construction superintendent and 10 years working in the state park service. He has always loved the process of building something from nothing and finding creative ways to bring new spaces to life. His years in the park service also gave him the chance to slow down, connect with people from all walks of life, and create meaningful moments through simple conversations and acts of kindness.  Dan always has a smile and a story that is sure to make you laugh!

Darlene has dedicated more than 20 years to serving others as a nurse leader. Caring for people has always come naturally to her, and her passion for making others feel supported and valued carries into every guest experience. Growing up in the South, she learned early on the importance of hospitality, comfort, and creating spaces where people feel instantly welcome. Inspired by her grandmother—an artist who loved painting and designing colorful spaces—Darlene developed a deep appreciation for beauty, warmth, and thoughtful details.

From time to time, we have folks ask us how we came to be.  And honestly, The Fox and The Farmhouse came to us quietly, almost like a memory carried in on the wind.

When we first stepped into this old farmhouse, we could feel its history in every creak of the floorboards and every weathered beam. It has stood for more than a century, rooted deeply in time, holding generations of stories within its walls and we’ve even had the privilege to meet a few grandchildren of the original owners.

But while we honored its age, we also wanted to breathe something new into it; a sense of freshness, warmth, and playfulness that felt alive again.  That’s how The Fox and The Farmhouse found its name.

The Fox felt like the perfect spirit for the farmhouse; clever yet gentle, curious yet comforting. It carried the charm of a rural setting while adding a little whimsy, a little spark of newness, to something beautifully old. The name became more than just a symbol; it became a bridge between history and imagination, between what the farmhouse had been and what it could become.

From there, everything else unfolded naturally.

We wanted our suites to feel like an extension of the farmhouse itself; somehow, we felt the suites belonged to the land, the wood, and the trees that have always surrounded places like this. Old farmhouses were built from nature and shaped by it, and we wanted each suite to carry that same sense of richness and grounding.

So the names came from the trees.

The Aspen.
The Maple.
The White Oak.
The Birch.
The Mahogany.

Each one chosen to reflect the beauty, strength, and warmth found in nature. Together, they tell the story of this century-old farmhouse; deeply rooted in history, shaped and softened by time, and surrounded by the same comforting warmth that fills a farmhouse kitchen.

In every name, every suite, and every detail, we simply wanted to honor the richness of nature, the richness of history, and the enduring warmth of a farmhouse that still has stories left to tell.
