The Mysterious Sound at the Farmhouse
Updated: Sep 26
Just another ordinary day at The Fox and The Farmhouse… or so I thought.

One of the things about living in a historic farmhouse is that when you hear a strange noise, your imagination can take you in all sorts of directions.
And today, mine certainly did.
Early after at The Fox and The Farmhouse, so it’s just me, Charlie (our Springer Spaniel) and my grandson, James, just gets off the bus.
We go inside and I tell him to keep Charlie company while I head upstairs to change the laundry. Nothing unusual about that.
But when I come back downstairs, I hear something. A faint little whirrrrrrrr.
It sounds almost like a tiny motor running somewhere.
I stop. I listen. There it is again.
Now, when you live in a house that dates back to 1906, a mysterious mechanical sound gets your attention pretty quickly.
So, I start investigating. I walk through the house, listening carefully. Charlie comes along with me, faithfully following from room to room downstairs while I try to track down the source.
Is it coming from underneath the house? I listen. Maybe it’s inside one of the walls? I listen again.
I move to another room. And I can still hear it.
At this point, I’m getting more puzzled by the minute. No matter where Charlie and I go, that little motor sound seems to follow us. I ask James, "Do you hear that whirring sound"; as I continue to look around.
Finally, James looks at me and very casually says: “Oh, I put the neck cooling fan on Charlie.”
I look down. And there stands Charlie. Wearing a little cooling fan around his neck.
The same Charlie who has been faithfully following me through the entire downstairs while I search for the mysterious noise. It isn’t underneath the house. It isn’t hiding inside our 120-year-old walls.
The mysterious little motor sound has been walking around the house with me the entire time.
And somehow, despite looking directly at Charlie more than once during our investigation, I never notice the fan around his neck. (To be fair his neck is white and so is the fan) 😂
Apparently, Charlie and I make a terrible investigative team. But I have to give him credit, he stayed right beside me through the whole thing. 😂
Life at The Farmhouse
There’s so much we love sharing about The Fox and The Farmhouse, from cozy rooms and weekend breakfasts to peaceful porches and the thoughtful details that make a stay feel special.
It’s a real home. A historic home. And sometimes it’s a home where you spend several minutes trying to diagnose a mysterious mechanical problem only to discover that the “problem” is happily walking around beside you.
These are the little moments that make life here memorable.
Just another day at The Fox and The Farmhouse.
